So hatten wir das auch geplant. Also Krypts am Freitag.

DEMON HEAD AND ILL WICKER LIVE AT MONARCH!

EARLY SHOW. Has to be over at 10 PM!

When traditional/proto-doom is done right, there are few things finer, and few if any bands are doing it better than Demon Head. The Copenhagen-dwelling quintet recently had a demo tape released by the venerable Caligari Records, and it’s a slow-burning scorcher that quite frankly blows recent big-name practitioners of the style such as Kadavar and Orchid out of the water. It really is that damn good.

But what makes it so good? Well for starters, it’s obvious that these guys have intently studied the one key element of Black Sabbath that so many bands ignore; the swing. Bill Ward and Geezer Butler had a loose, jazzy rhythm style that made Sabbath’s songs swing no matter how hard ‘n’ heavy they got. The same is very much true of Demon Head’s rhythm section comprised of bassist Fuglsang and drummer Wittus, and it’s this that’ll have you begging for more when these twenty minutes are up.

Of course, there’s more to Demon Head than just the swing. Vocalist Ferreira Larsen does an expert job of channeling ’70s Bobby Liebling, inflecting the songs with a haunting yet soulful quality. Gjerlufsen and Gjerluff Nielsen trade fuzzed-up riffs and leads that sound like Victor Griffin jamming out with Tony Iommi; that might sound like hyperbole, but the quality of playing here really is more akin to the classic doom bands than any of Demon Head’s contemporaries. Most bands attempting this style circa now sound like half-assed facsimiles of what came before; Demon Head sound like they truly believe their peers to be doom metal’s godfathers.

"If the Incredible String Band was the ultimate sunshine folk psych act, they had their counterpart in the deathly dark acid folk band Comus. In the group that we present to you now, these two sides are united. They will lure you with melodies, treacherously fair, until you suddenly find yourself deep in the dark woods, face to face with the Devil, pleading to get to keep your wits... and then the slow witch dance begins, under the light of the pale moon..." (Psykjunta Festival)

"...deeply personal and profoundly eerie. Imagine a drugged-out Tim buckley fronting Comus on some heathen ceremony in the forests of Lapland and you'll have a slight clue as to what this is all about. With excellent album-opener Fret, they even manage to outdo their mighty forerunners..." (T.Pettersson)

Berlin show cancelled
It has come to our attention that there has been a considerable controversy around the Berlin Pop-Kultur festival, an event which was presented as an artistic and cultural event, and where we were invited and have been scheduled to play this Wednesday. The extent of this controversy, revolved around the partially funding of the festival, has resulted in giving a political character to the festival and therefore to all the artists participating.
This makes the situation uncomfortable for us.
For us music and our art, are about expanding minds, not about ideologies.
We do not want to endorse any state, governance or agenda; open or hidden.
Therefore, in order to distance ourselves from this political reality some more, we have decided to cancel our performance at the Berlin Pop Kultur Festival.
We would like to apologise to those wanting to see us and we hope that you can understand and respect this decision of ours.

Ich will einfach nur Riffs hören und nicht die ganze Zeit über Nazis reden ;_;

5.
Eine finnische Metalband zieht nach und boykottiert das Festival mit der Lullibegründung, es gäbe ja jetzt eine Kontroverse und das ganze werde ja politisch und man wolle sich jetzt "to distance ourselves from this political reality some more". Außerdem wolle man ja nicht "any state, governance or agenda".

Aua.
