Who's looking forward to the new album? How do you like the first song released from it?
About a year ago, the German progressive metal band Vanden Plas Official delivered the music world part one of their two part concept album, “The Ghost Xperiment”. Entitled "The Ghost Xperiment – Awakening," the album ended on a cliffhanger, where during a séance, Gideon Grace, the main character, at last encounters the ghosts who have haunted him since his childhood. Ghosts? Exactly! Now comes the dramatic conclusion of the story with their new album, “The Ghost Xperiment – Illumination”. Fans can get their first taste of new music via the new single, 'Under The Horizon,' which is out today.
"For years, I've felt driven by the idea of writing a ghost story that casts a different light on the genre, and ... at the end leaves the audience with a plausible explanation," author and Vanden Plas lead vocalist Andy Kuntz elucidates. As for his inspiration for the story, Kuntz came across the Phillip-Experiment, an authentic and credibly documented investigation of necromancy…literally, conjuring dead spirits. "I knew immediately that I had found the basis for the story that I had been seeking for so long."
Thus developed the story for "The Ghost Xperiment," which continues in the second part "Illumination," and reaches its startling conclusion. But of course these intelligent, inventive story telling lyrics need a strong musical vehicle for delivery and Vanden Plas astounds in that respect. While the orchestral arrangements in the first album in the saga had been reduced compared to the two previous "Chronicles of the Immortals" series, this time the progressive aspects of the band’s sound are even more apparent. Along with the band's brilliant musicians, Stephan Lill (Guitar), Günter Werno (Keyboards), Andreas Lill (Drums), and Torsten Reichert (Bass), prestigious guests also add to this incredible showing. Alea from the leading German medieval rock band Saltatio Mortis joins Kuntz for a duet on the bonus track 'Krieg kennt keine Sieger,’ Snow White Blood singer Ulli Perhonen shines in 'Black Waltz Death' and 'The Ghost Engineers,' and the backing vocals team is made up of longtime musical colleagues including Oliver Hartmann from Avantasia and Herbie Langhans from Firewind.
This highly concentrated musical power, paired with unexpected twists such as in 'Black Waltz Death' or the 13-minute long 'The Ouroboros' is what makes "The Ghost Xperiment - Illumination" so incredibly gripping. In addition, with the opener 'World is Falling Down,' Vanden Plas has created an unbelievably driving steam hammer engine and with 'Under the Horizon,' a true prog anthem. After hearing its hypnotic refrain just once, it's already impossible to imagine the band's musical universe without it.
In short, Vanden Plas continues to dedicatedly pursue their own unique path.
The band’s creativity has not been deterred by the current pandemic. Theater engagements naturally had to be temporarily suspended, but in the months preceding, Vanden Plas had already showcased their own rock opera "Everyman" in Pforzheim, "Der Herbst des Winterkönigs" (The Autumn of the Winterking) in Amberg, and "American Idiot" at the Prinzregententheater in Munich as well as at the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck. Those kinds of productions are no small undertaking, but despite the limits being pushed, the band performed "Concerto For Group and Orchestra," the masterwork from Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord, in Kaiserslautern and also found time to finalize the song material for "The Ghost Xperiment - Illumination."
Even in a time of crisis, the band has managed to progress, to give their best, and to present their fans with another glorious work that literally explodes with variety and vitality. "The Ghost Xperiment - Illumination" is precisely the medicine that we all need right now.

Das hatten sie, meine ich, im Zuge der Veröffentlichung des Vorgängers schon durchklingen lassen, dass bereits 2020 albumtechnisch nachgelegt werden soll. Auch wenn eben dieser Vorgänger nun nicht das Überwerk ist: Die Ankündigung eines neuen Vanden-Plas-Werks ist grundsätzlich eine sehr gute Nachricht!

Auf VP-Verhältnisse gesehen sicher richtig. Im direkten Vergleich räumt die aktuelle Thoughts Factory das Ding einfach beiseite. Trotzdem eine schöne Wendung nach den doch recht langatmigen "Hohlbein"-Alben und es fand sich endlich mal der "klassische" VP-Sound mit unüberhörbarer Metalkante wieder ein. Am Ende war es mir dennoch ein wenig zu gleichförmig, was im Übrigen auch an der schon recht gebügelt wirkenden Produktion liegen könnte.

Wie wohl alle schon dienstälteren Bands gleich welcher Sparte haben auch VP ihren Zenit sicherlich schon überschritten, gar keine Frage. Für tolle Songs reicht es noch immer, nur man erwartet irgendwie mehr. Fairerweise sollte ich mir Teil 1 denn doch einfach mal wieder anhören, auch, wenn ich so ad hoc und aus dem "Erinnerungshören" heraus durchaus bei Dir bin.

Ein echter Kracher indes: "The Seraphic Live Works". Hatte ich lange übersehen und zunächst nur "zur Komplettierung" angeschafft. So im Nachhinein: Gott sei Dank, tolles Livealbum.
 
Kann mich an der neuen Nummer kaum satthören! Erinnert mich von der Atmosphäre bzw. der Stimmung, die es in mir erzeugt, etwas an meine liebste Scheibe von ihnen ("Beyond Daylight"). Unglaublich stark. Und jetzt sind es noch 2 Monate bis zum Release...grmpf!!

Aber aus alter Verbundenheit und Sympathie wird auch "The Ghost Xperiment - Illumination" zeitnah eingetütet.

Für mich sind VP so eine Wohlfühlband, die gehen irgendwie immer. Aber ich weiß was du meinst, mich reißt z.B. eine Ankündigung eines neuen Kamelot nicht mehr so vom Hocker wie das vielleicht früher einmal war.

Das Teil lief die letzten beiden Wochen regelmäßig, was schon ein gutes Zeichen ist.
Der zweite Teil des "Ghost Xperiment" kommt um einiges progressiver und dynamischer daher, als der eher straightere erste Part.

Andy Kuntz liefert mal wieder eine richtig gute Gesangsleistung ab und hat über die Jahre kaum an Volumen und Ausdruck verloren.
Wirklich erstaunlich. Und nein, ich verkneife mir jetzt einen Seitenhieb gegen einen gewissen kanadischen Sänger...;)
Auch ein Stephan Lill sticht mit seinem großartigen Gitarrenspiel enorm heraus und muss sich vor einem John Petrucci wahrlich nicht verstecken.

Highlights: "When the world is falling down", "Under the horizon", "Black waltz death", "Fatal arcadia" und der großartige Longtrack "The ouroboros ".

Für mich das beste Album seit der "The Seraphic clockwork" und mir starke 8,5 Punkte wert.

Eine der stärksten Platten des Jahres 2020 ist der zweite Teil der Ghost Xperiment Story von Vanden Plas. Die Pfälzer um den Sänger Andy Kuntz legen ein Werk vor, das sich vom ersten Teil doch etwas unterscheidet. Während der Vorgänger deutlich entschlackt wurde und mehr Hardrock als Metal bot, wird jetzt wieder mehr auf Keyboardbetonten Progressive Metal gesetzt. Over The Top sind „Black Waltz Death“, „When The World Is Falling Down“, „Under The Horizon“, „The Lonely Psychogon“ und der abwechslungsreiche Longtrack „The Ouroboros“. Technische Finesse, ein Füllhorn am Melodien und gesunde Härte ergeben ein in sich stimmiges Bild. Wieder einmal eifern sie ihren großen Vorbildern „Dream Theater“ nach und „Andy Kuntz“ wäre der deutlich bessere Sänger für das Traumtheater.

HILFE! Ich bin noch nicht zum Hören gekommen, was ich hier so lese muss ich das wohl mal fixestens nachholen. Momentan ist mein CD-Player mit den ersten Alben von Death Angel dauerhaft belegt (mein Dank an meine Frau für ein so tolles Weihnachtsgeschenk), des Weiteren gab es die Coroner-Autopsy-Box, die weiterhin meine musikalische Beschäftigungstherapie in Corona-Zeiten darstellt. Und weil mir ja die nette Gemeinde hier unlängst die Vanishing Point ans Herz gelegt hatte konnte ich nicht umhin, mir auch "Dead Elysium" (meine erste Vanishing Point seit "Tangled....") zuzulegen. Eine nette Ersatzdroge für Evergrey, die weiterhin des Öfteren läuft und noch auf Herz und Nieren zu prüfen ist.

Aber dann werde ich mich selbstverständlich an dieses wohl doch sehr feine Vanden-Plas-Werk machen...
 
Am kommenden Freitag wird in Kaiserslautern das Sinfoniekonzert "Anima One" aufgeführt. Es handelt sich hierbei um ein Rock-meets-Classic Projekt des Vanden Plas -Keyborders und Komponisten Günter Werno. Vanden Plas spielt dabei gemeinsam mit dem Orchester des Pfalztheaters.

Als jemand, der die Band seit "Days of Thunder" richtig gut fand, tue ich mir, seitdem die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Pfalztheater enger geworden ist, mit VP-Scheiben schwer.

Für mich war "Abydos" (Andy Kuntz Soloscheibe und Musical) der Höhepunkt, seither hatte ich immer das Gefühl, daß die Scheiben mehr auf Bühnentauglichkeit getrimmt waren denn auf "gutes Progalbum". Die späteren Scheiben stehen zwar alle im Regal, laufen aber eigentlich nie.

Trotzdem freut mich der Erfolg für die Musiker und die Band!

"Live & Immortal" is a special addition to the storied catalog of Vanden Plas as, aside from the "The Seraphic Live Works", a live recording of their revered 70 minute performance at Progpower USA 2011, it is the band's first complete show to be released on long-form video.
Recorded December 30, 2016 in their hometown of Kaiserslautern, Germany, Vanden Plas put forth an epic performance in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The bulk of the setlist is based on the two "Chronicles Of The Immortals" albums (2013 and 2014, respectively) and additionally, includes tracks that have never been played live before, like the atmospheric "Scarlet Flower Fields" and "The Final Murder", which reveals itself to be a captivating 11 minute monster. Fans can also expect all-time favorites from the band's repertoire like "Holes In The Sky", "Iodic Rain", "Postcard To God", and "Christ 0".
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by the long-time Vanden Plas sound engineer Markus Teske at Bazement Studios, "Live & Immortal", delivers a clear, powerful sound which brings the live feeling through the speakers straight into your eagerly awaiting ears. Oliver Barth, who worked with the band on their music videos for "Stone Roses Edge" and "When The World Is Falling Down", filmed the show. Editing was done by Björn Widmann and Andreas Lill.
Fans who have seen Vanden Plas perform live know what they can expect out the band on stage: a powerful and energetic show, paired with a skillful, empathic musicianship. "The idea of recording and releasing some rock songs is something I've been thinking about for a while. While composing, I kept coming up with songs that have the spirit of the '80s. As a big fan of bands from that era, like Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, and the like, I still have a huge love for music from that time. The goal was to transport that classic music into the here and now. Hard rock with a powerful production, peppered with modern musical elements," says Lill.
With the songs coming along nicely, the creative juices flowing, and a label home in place, Lill and Kuntz knew that a completely new entity had to be created, which would give the whole thing its own vibe and aura. When Kuntz came up with the name All My Shadows, they both knew that "the band name perfectly reflects the dark colorful aura of the lyrics and melody lines in a perfect way. The debut album, "Eerie Monsters" is an exciting musical journey through time, transporting our widely branched "heavy rock roots" into the present day in a melodically exciting symbiosis of retro ambience and modern sounds. Sonically, somewhat related to bands such as Ghost, Stone Sour, or SOEN, if you will, the music unfolds in an intoxicating manner. It's time for The New Retro-Rock!" declare Lill and Kuntz.
Keyboardist Markus Teske, who is also the owner of Bazement Studios and has been turning the knobs on the mixing desk for all of Vanden Plas' albums since 2002, was brought on board first. Beside being a superb engineer, he is a virtuoso at his instrument too. Then followed Franky R., a bassist who has played with renowned guitarist Michael Schenker, among others. And to keep it in the family, Stephan's brother Andreas Lill, also of Vanden Plas and who has a tremendous reputation for his musical experience and skill set, was brought in on drums to complete the line-up.
Lill and Kuntz unanimously answer with a clear "No!" whether the participation of the Vanden Plas musicians will bring All My Shadows too close sonically to Vanden Plas. Both musically and lyrically, the differences are too great, too tangible, too obvious.
"Vanden Plas stands very much for progressive metal in all its variations, while All My Shadows stands very much for melodic hard rock. Musical points of contact are there, overlaps are not. All My Shadows have all the characteristics to have their own identity," says Lill.

Schön melodisch und geht gut nach vorne.

Auf Power- Metal (darf man das noch schreiben?) "entschlackter" Vanden-Plas-Sound - warum nicht? Klingt sehr gefällig und bleibt recht schnell hängen, völlig in Ordnung die Nummer. Macht Laune, aber soooo einen weiten Sprung weg vom eigentlichen Bandsound kann ich da gar nicht erkennen.

Womöglich wird das Album (das wohl ursprünglich gar mit mehreren Gastsängern geplant war, so im ROCKS-Interview geäußert von Herrn Kuntz) aber die ein oder andere Überraschung parat haben - falls nicht nehme ich auch gern die restlichen Songs einfach in dieser Qualität.
