Rush - YYZ

" The song 'YYZ' is something of a rhythm section "tour-de-force" for Geddy and myself, and we indulged ourselves richly! The title refers to the identity code used by the Toronto International Airport. We used the Morse Code signal emitted by the control tower as a rhythmic device for the introduction (-.--/-.--/--..) dah dit dah dah dah dit dah dah/dah dah dit dit, = Y-Y-Z. The body of the song is influenced by the side of rock/jazz fusion which leans more towards rock, like Brand X, Bill Bruford, and some of Weather Report's work.
Because of the complexity of Alex and Geddy's parts, we decided to record each instrument separately, so that everyone could concentrate solely on his own part. This is very unusual for us. We usually record the basic track as a trio, then overdub or redo parts as necessary, later on. It was interesting to be all alone in the studio, humming the song to myself while playing to nothing! Fortunately, the arrangement was very organized, and I knew the song well enough to imagine the other musicians." (Neal Peart)

Afterimage (31 Punkte, 4 Nennungen)

"This is about a friend of ours, Robby Whelan, from Le Studio. He was one of the tape operators at the studio. This guy was so together, he was amazing. He really knew everything that was going on there, he was a wonderful person who loved life to the fullest. Unfortunately he was killed in a car accident a year ago, so it was a song for him. We wanted to celebrate his life, but there is a sadness to the music, and the guitar solo is a translation of that. I think about him every time we play that song. He worked at Le Studio, so we were right there where he was. We turned the lights down a bit, and I was emotional and excited. I don’t know how many times my eyes got all teary going into that solo when we were running it down. Halfway through, I’d get so fired up that I would go out of time, so we’d rewind it to the front and I’d go “Okay, let’s try it again”. So the solo was like that for me, very gripping. I got tuned in to the lyrics." (Alex Lifeson)

I see the footprints! I remember!Rush - Afterimage
