Thresholds läuft grad. Fand ich damals (also als ich sie irgendwann ein paar Jahre nach Release die ersten Male gehört habe) unfassbar scheiße. Läuft mir aber grad gut rein.
Ging mir genau so.
Jahrelang sträflich ignoriert, jetzt im Zuge der "Paradox" Euphorie quasi neu entdeckt. Gleiches gilt für die "Nocturnus" EP

Ja, gell! Und ich fand ja auch das letzte reguläre Album immer sehr geil. Keine Ahnung, weswegen ich Thresholds so lange einfach links liegen ließ.

Fragte, weil ich mehr Probleme mit Threshholds gehabt hätte, wenn ich "The Key" vorher abgefeiert hätte. Bin froh dass es so rum war.
Mit dem dritten Album konnte ich nichts vernünftiges anfangen.

Mir gefällt sie saugut. Ist halt deutlich reduzierter (aber kein Rückschritt zum Sound der Demos), aber noch immer ziemlich eigenständig und vor allem sehr düster. Ich persönlich kann es klar als Nocturnus identifizieren (die weirden Riffs, Rhythmik, auch noch die Keys, die aber ebenfalls in den Hintergrund gerückt sind), aber die Opulenz ist eher einer monolithischen Schwere gewichen. Ich muss immer mal wieder an eine eingängigere und weniger extreme Variante von Demilich denken. Kann aber auch gut verstehen, wenn man darauf nicht klar kommen kann als Fan der anderen Werke.

Die Ethereal Tomb wird sträflich unterbewertet! Natürlich gibt es vor dem Hintergrund der Band History einen faden Beigeschmack und Browning sieht es verständlicherweise anders, aber ich finde die Platte absolut großartig. Es fehlen die durchgedrehten, irren Elemente und natürlich Brownings charakteristisches Drumming und Gesang, auf der anderen Seite sind die Songs und die Darbietung super, insgesamt etwas simpler und "basischer", aber im Kern immer noch Nocturnus. Ich würde Dir dringend empfehlen Dir die Scheibe zumindest mal anzuhören, ich mag sie wie gesagt sehr! Anspieltip: "Search for the Trident".

"Paradox" ist Geilerei galore! Die Scheibe legt weiter zu und frisst sich immer weiter nach oben. Top 3 of the year bisher. Gott, wie großartig sich die Scheibe anfühlt!

Although he played a pivotal role in the emergence of the early U.S. death metal movement as both a co-founder of Morbid Angel and a member of Incubus in the mid-to-late-1980s, Mike Browning’s legacy is most inextricably tied to his involvement in Nocturnus in the late-80s and early-90s. In 1990, Nocturnus revolutionized death metal with the release of its first full-length album, “The Key,” which for the first time in the history of the sub-genre incorporated keyboards as an essential element of a death metal band’s sound. During a critical three-year period prior to the release of this album, Nocturnus developed this unique sound, as documented by two demo recordings, entitled “Nocturnus” and “The Science of Horror,” which were disseminated on cassette format in typically limited numbers in 1987 and 1988, respectively. The second of these demos, in particular, contains embryonic versions of several songs that would eventually be re-recorded for inclusion on “The Key.” However, as tends to be the case with demo recordings, these versions represent a significantly more primitive musical vision, as compared to the more polished recordings on the ensuing album.
In celebration and commemoration of the Nocturnus appearance at the NWN! Fest Vol. IV in November of 2014, Nuclear War Now! first offered a reissue of both Nocturnus demos on a single picture LP, limited to 100 copies and only available at the festival. Soon thereafter and in support of the Nocturnus gig in San Francisco on March 13th, 2015, NWN released a second version of the same recordings on limited red vinyl with jackets showcasing the original artwork from both demo cassettes. Nuclear War Now! is once again proud to make a less-limited vinyl edition of these demos available to the general public. This version features appropriately and tastefully updated original artwork from the renowned Zbigniew Bielak as well as the most extensive biography ever written on the developmental and demo years of Nocturnus and Mike Browning’s previous participation in Morbid Angel and Incubus. In addition, the forty-plus-page booklet contained within and exclusive to this edition also visually documents the band’s pre-album era by featuring the demo and flyer artwork of Allen Muse, Ron Harris, and others, along with an impressive collection of band photos. In short, this release serves to invite the listener to revisit the earliest days of one of death metal’s greatest bands.
